Top 5 Games Game Awards Missed

When all the nominees of 2019 Game Awards were revealed, many gamers felt disappointed. What happened with the variety of genres and games? Some games received several awards, while others were not mentioned in the list at all.

But this is standard practice for many awards. They have a committee that has to decide which game was the best… based on what? Some judges take Metacritic and other gaming sites scores into consideration, others totally miss it. Some check the number of downloads and purchases via the game, others are just being subjective and express only their personal opinion. We are all people here, anyway.

Many games from this year’s nominee list were released only several years before the award took place. For example, Death Stranding was out a few weeks before it was nominated multiple times. It did not take high scores on Metacritic, and while the game is good, there are too many games that have similar numbers.

The Game Awards Biggest Mistakes

While not many of us are happy with the 2019 year results, we came up with our own list of nominees we have to praise here. If you have more games to add on the list, be our guest. But be a fair judge and name only the best games! We promise you to do the same.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Game

Made in the Metroidvania action genre, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night was released in June 2019 for Windows PC and other platforms. It was developed by ArtPlay, headed by Koji Igarashi, creator of Castlevania TV show. Now, if you have previously missed the game somehow, you can imagine the level of its graphics greatness.

Or course, graphics are not everything in the game, but it’s pretty close to it. The atmosphere of 18th century England is incredible. Add here lots of magic and a well-developed plot, and you receive a perfect background for the main character Miriam who has to save humanity. The game is considered to be one of the best in its genre.

It did not receive any nominations from The Game Awards. Maybe, this is due to the fact that Bloodstained was a Kickstarter project. Maybe because it is too extraordinary, too theme-based. Who knows! It definitely has incredible potential and an army of fans.

Power Rangers: Battle For The Grid

Power Rangers: Battle For The Grid Game

Power Rangers: Battle For The Grid is an action and fighting game, developed by nWay company. The game was released in September 2019 on Windows PC. For those who believe that the glory days of good fighting games are over, we recommend to check this game out.

This year the competition inside the genre was tough. We all know the names of Mortal Kombat 11, Dead or Alive 6, Samurai Showdown. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate can be named as one of the brightest representatives of 2019 as well. They all deserve to receive awards. Let’s just remember the nail-biting atmosphere of our waiting of Mortal Kombat 11 release. And as you may notice, we did not mention here Power Rangers. But its current nominee Jump Force, makes us wonder what went wrong there.

At the same time, there are Power Rangers, beloved and classic characters that came to life in amazing graphics. The story may already be familiar to all Power Rangers fans. Plus, there are numerous features inside. Why was it left unnoticed? Its awful start right after release may be a part of the explanation. And while the situation was significantly improved, the committee did not pay attention to it.

AI: The Somnium Files

AI: The Somnium Files game

Anime styled adventure game from Spike Chunsoft. It was released in September 2019. Full of mysteries and Tokyo landscapes, the game had all chances to head the list. There is a free choice mechanism inside with multiple endings and amazing anime graphics.

Well, the one explanation that we may think of is it is actually weird, with blood, empty eye-sockets, and other creeps. The game is one big puzzle plus a great graphic novel. Maybe the jury did not pay much attention to it after watching the trailer.

What a big mistake! It is rated higher on Metacritic than award-winning Death Stranding and even Control. And these scores were given by players. The game definitely has a well-developed intriguing plot with mysteries, dreams, memory loss, and so on.

The Walking Dead: The Final Season

The Walking Dead: The Final Season

The Walking Dead: The Final Season is the 4th part of The Walking Dead series. It is an action-adventure, the final chapter in the story based on a comic book. It was made by Telltale Games and Skybound Games. This is a story of Clementine who has to protect AJ no matter what it costs. It is sweet and deep. The graphics are simply fantastic.

The Walking Dead series was popular for many years. It made cinematic adventure genre visible to the audience. Together with Clementine, who was a small child in the first game, we grew up and learned how to be fearless and kind no matter whether you are standing surrounded by angry zombies in a post-apocalyptic world or sitting in front of your PC. Of course, we are being subjective here.

If to consider this part separately from others, it may be not the best in the raw. We may agree with that. But it is the final chapter in a brilliantly developed series. Don’t you think that it is worth more attention?

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order game

Star Wars universe is almost everywhere you go. And we get it. It may be too much pressure for anyone to handle. And yet this piece of art created by Respawn Entertainment deserves a chance. Yes, you heard it right, those Respawn Entertainment that stands behind Apex Legends, Call of Duty, and Titanfall. In November 2019, it was officially released for Windows. And all we can blame for its absence in the award list is the lack of time.

The action takes place five years after the movie Star Wars: Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith, and 14 years before Episode 4. And it is definitely one of the best games of the year. It was a major success, with millions of positive reviews. The game sticks close to the story which makes it even more valuable to all Star Wars fans.

There were not so many good games based on Star Wars saga recently. And it was highly appreciated by all players. It has everything for success: solid gameplay, outstanding visuals, great combat mechanics. So why this game was ignored by The Game Awards? The most obvious reason is that the game was released on the day of the deadline for the awards: Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order appeared on November 15. All the nominees were officially announced on November 19.

What Did We Miss?

Of course, there were more games we have to put on the list. Name your favorite and explain why you think they must be awarded instead of being here. Have you checked the game awards nominees of 2019? Do you agree that all of the games mentioned there deserve to receive awards?
